For those who had a complete draft (due today), students participated in a peer-editing workshop using a checklist as a tool to give feedback. Those students who had not finished their first draft used class time to write.

Since I was at a training on Friday, many students had not yet completed the outline. Class time was given to catch up in the writing process. The expectation is that the first draft will be ready for peer-editing on Wednesday.

We went over the Literary Analysis Graduation Portfolio task that students will write in response to at least 2 texts from unit 1. We reviewed the 6 texts that we read and students were given time to work on SAT Vocab #2 and to think about which Essential Question and texts they will use.
Homework Study SAT Vocab #2 Choose texts and begin looking for quotes/evidence to use in paper
Students completed an in class essay on a topic of their choice. The essay was about Frederick Douglass. We also practiced using talking to the text with a poem titled, "America, i-c-u" by Phil Duran.
Homework Read Malcolm X's speech, "The Ballot or the Bullet" and write a 1 page summary.
Evaluate Frederick Douglass' relationship to slavery and America
Students finished chapter 10 of the text and the questions for chapters 8-10. Students were also given a list of SAT vocabulary words to define and study for next Tuesday's vocab quiz.
Homework Finish reading the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (chapter 11 and Epilogue)
We have 2 chapters to go! Last class we read through Chapter 9 and some of 10. We discussed Frederick's relationship with Covey and his newly found sense of empowerment.
American Literature is an 11th grade English course. We will work closely with the American History course throughout the school year to explore themes around the American Dream, what it means to be an American, and Freedom. See the attached syllabus for thematic units and projects.
