How to prepare for your interview

We went over things to do and say before conducting the interview.
Students completed/typed their interview questions (DUE TODAY, first benchmark)

Create/Develop Interview Questions

Students began to create interview questions based on several categories/topics:
  • The American Dream
  • Life before Immigration
  • Life in America
  • Relationships
  • Reflections on Immigration
  • Ideals/Philosophies
Students were given a copy of Enrique's Journey and an active reading guide to use with each section of reading. We began reading the Prologue and students were taught how to apply the steps in the reading guide

How to ask good questions

We read a short text "My Chinese Name..." The text was written from the voice of interviewee (similar to what they will do with their monologues). Students selected questions that would be asked to elicit the responses that were given in the text.
We also discussed open-ended, original, and follow-up questions.

Introduction to Moving Voices Project

We discussed our next unit and project, which will culminate in an exhibition. We looked at student exemplars of the monologue. Then we read two different monologues and identified strengths and weaknesses in both.

As we get ready to start our new unit/project, we considered what is means to be an American. We viewed a segment of the film Crash. Students participated in a Socratic Seminar answering the question Who/What is an American?

Final draft of essay is due TODAY! Students had the class period to publish final drafts and work on their reflection.
